SINGAPORE: WhatsApp users in Singapore can now access breaking news updates directly from CNA through the app’s new feature, Channels, launched on June 8. This new addition allows users to receive broadcast messages from selected organizations, keeping them informed with the latest news, updates, and stories of interest.
Currently, Singapore and Colombia are the only two countries with early access to WhatsApp Channels.

How to Access WhatsApp Channels To start using WhatsApp Channels, simply update your WhatsApp app to the latest version. Once updated, a new tab titled ‘Updates’ will appear, where you’ll find both Status updates and channels you choose to follow. These will be kept separate from your personal chats.
Alternatively, click on the invite link to CNA’s WhatsApp Channel, and once you update your app, you’ll be able to join directly.
Currently, only selected organizations and individuals can create a channel, but in the coming months, regular users will also be able to do so. Channel administrators can choose who can follow their channel and whether they want it to be discoverable via an in-app directory, which is expected to roll out soon. Administrators will also have the ability to block screenshots or forwarding of messages from their channel, if preferred.
Importantly, WhatsApp clarifies that Channels are not end-to-end encrypted by default, and the history of a Channel’s messages will be stored on servers for up to 30 days.
