Sengkang MPs unveil an ambitious community development roadmap featuring park revitalisation, green initiatives, and resident-led planning as part of efforts to foster a more connected and inclusive estate.
The Workers’ Party Members of Parliament for Sengkang – He Ting Ru, Louis Chua, and Jamus Lim – have launched a comprehensive town renewal strategy titled “Sengkang Town Plan: 2025 & Beyond”, setting out their development priorities for the coming years. The announcement was made on Saturday (5 April), and outlines dozens of projects aimed at upgrading infrastructure, revitalising shared spaces and enhancing liveability for residents.
At the heart of the proposal is a bold revamp of Sengkang Sculpture Park, situated along Compassvale Street. Town Council Chair He Ting Ru explained that the landmark Whale Sculpture will serve as a focal point in a three-part revitalisation.
The transformation begins with Zone A, where kelong-style shelters linked by stilted pathways will offer residents scenic recreational spaces. Zone B will feature a dynamic water-themed layout, complete with a sailboat structure, boardwalks, and an additional pavilion. Meanwhile, Zone C is set to introduce a garden area with trellises, expanded seating, and a coral reef sculpture that complements existing installations.
The redesign pays homage to Sengkang’s roots as a coastal fishing village, said Ms He. Additionally, a new steering group made up of young residents aged 18 to 30 will contribute to the planning and design process, ensuring that inclusion and diversity remain at the forefront of community improvements.
The broader town plan comprises 96 enhancement projects. Of these, 55 are geared towards improving accessibility and connectivity, while 41 target the revitalisation of facilities and communal spaces. Over 600 lifts across the estate will also undergo upgrades.
Residents in Anchorvale can anticipate the introduction of a butterfly sanctuary and hydroponic garden. Over in Buangkok, an edible rooftop garden is set to be developed, supporting gardening and culinary activities. A new BTO housing project and a dedicated dog park at Rivervale Shores are also in the pipeline.
Writing on social media, Assoc Prof Jamus Lim reflected that the previous five years had been focused on stabilising and improving service delivery within the newly-formed Sengkang ward. With that foundation laid, the latest plan signals the constituency’s transition into a new chapter of growth and community building.
“These may seem like small things,” he said, “but they have a significant impact on residents’ daily lives. Every piece of feedback has been treated with seriousness.”
In 2024, Sengkang recorded the highest number of proposed projects submitted for Community Improvement Project Committee (CIPC) funding across all town councils in Singapore — a sign, Prof Lim said, of both resident engagement and active governance.
Mr Chua added that beyond the physical enhancements, the initiatives are designed to foster a deeper sense of community, with the hope that “neighbourliness, empathy, and sustainability” will grow alongside new facilities.
Public reaction to the announcement has been overwhelmingly positive. Comments poured in on social media, praising the MPs’ leadership and hands-on approach.
“Impressive work – the three MPs have managed Sengkang superbly. A true model for other wards,” one netizen commented. Another wrote, “Thank you for your dedication to making Sengkang a better home. Wishing you success at the next General Election.”
Several residents also expressed appreciation for the MPs’ visible involvement in estate matters, noting that such attentiveness is rare and deeply valued.
