Workers’ Party Returns to Jalan Besar GRC for Outreach with Party Leaders Including Pritam Singh

Pritam Singh and Sylvia Lim lead the WP team in reconnecting with the community.

The Workers’ Party (WP) team, spearheaded by its Secretary-General Pritam Singh and Chairperson Sylvia Lim, visited Bendemeer Market & Food Centre and Whampoa Market & Food Centre over the weekend as part of a grassroots outreach initiative in the Jalan Besar GRC.

They were joined by fellow WP Members of Parliament, including Dennis Tan from Hougang SMC, Faisal Manap from Aljunied GRC, and Sengkang GRC MPs He Ting Ru and Louis Chua. Candidates from past elections, such as Fadli Fawzi and Abdul Shariff Aboo Kassim, also participated in the outreach efforts.

For Louis Chua, it was a nostalgic return, as he spent part of his childhood in the area before his family moved to a new home. “Returning to Bendemeer (also known as ‘Mang Kar Ka’ as described by my Grandma) felt like a homecoming of sorts. I was told by my parents that we used to live at Block 30 in the initial years of my life before they purchased their HDB flat in Bishan,” Chua shared on Facebook.

He added, “Though I was too young to remember everything, I recall visiting the markets on weekends with my parents for our usual breakfast and grocery shopping. I used to enjoy the motorized kiddy cars and bikes in the open area!”

The WP last contested in the Jalan Besar GRC in 2015, securing 32% of the votes. In the 2020 Singapore general election, Lim Tean’s Peoples Voice ran against the PAP team led by Josephine Teo, achieving 34% of the votes.
