WP calls for greater involvement of former players and a balanced approach to talent development
During a Workers’ Party (WP) town hall on March 25, Member of Parliament Jamus Lim conveyed the party’s support for expanding Singapore’s football scene, advocating for more involvement of former national players in shaping and leading local football programs. Lim recalled Singapore’s “golden age of football,” with iconic moments like the Kallang Wave, expressing that the sport still has untapped potential.
He emphasized WP’s belief that Singaporean society should encourage and value pursuits beyond academics. “The route to a good life doesn’t solely lie in academic success,” Lim explained, pointing out that in other parts of the world, individuals with skills outside traditional fields are compensated and supported to contribute meaningfully to their societies and economies.
WP Vice-Chairman Muhammad Faisal, who was not at the event, called for open dialogue among all stakeholders to foster local players, coaches, and clubs. He also proposed that the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) host a national discussion on football’s future. This aligns with the government’s “Unleash the Roar” initiative, recently announced by Minister for Culture, Community, and Youth Edwin Tong, which aims to develop Singaporean football talent and work toward qualifying for the 2034 FIFA World Cup.
