Pritam Singh reflects on unity, introspection, and policies for a brighter future in his National Day address.
SINGAPORE: Workers’ Party Secretary-General and Leader of the Opposition Pritam Singh drew inspiration from the iconic song “Home” in the party’s National Day message on Tuesday (Aug 8). He highlighted Singapore’s resilience amid recent challenges, emphasizing the nation’s ability to overcome adversity and renew itself.
“‘Home’ resonates deeply with our yearning to be connected to our homeland, embrace precious memories, and ignite our dreams for the future,” Mr. Singh wrote, calling the song a source of comfort during Singapore’s current phase of introspection, partly driven by recent controversies.
The 25th-anniversary remake of Kit Chan’s beloved song, he noted, is a timely reminder of the need for Singapore’s policies to evolve alongside changing circumstances. “Our national policies also need to be re-examined to make them relevant to today’s Singapore,” he said, pledging that the Workers’ Party would continue to advocate for policies that improve lives and livelihoods.
Mr. Singh outlined several proposals championed by the Workers’ Party that have made progress in Parliament and national discussions, including:
Increased allowances for full-time National Servicemen to account for rising living costs.
Engaging independent consultants for credential assessments in hiring foreign professionals.
Expanding housing options for singles.
Anti-discrimination legislation to ensure fair treatment for all.
Enhanced medical care for Singaporean athletes, including those with disabilities.
He concluded by reaffirming the WP’s commitment to raising constructive proposals in Parliament and advocating for a fairer, more inclusive society.
“The Workers’ Party will continue to work with Singaporeans to build our dreams together and foster a society that makes us proud, regardless of race, language, or religion,” Mr. Singh wrote, wishing all Singaporeans a Happy 58th National Day.
