Xi and Putin Reaffirm Strong Ties Amid Ukraine Crisis Discussions

Chinese and Russian leaders emphasise their enduring partnership, with Beijing expressing support for diplomatic efforts.

China and Russia Strengthen Diplomatic and Strategic Ties
On Monday, 24 February, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a phone conversation, reaffirming their close diplomatic and economic partnership. During the discussion, Xi praised Moscow’s efforts in attempting to ease tensions surrounding the Ukraine conflict, according to reports from China’s state media.

Xi expressed that China welcomes Russia’s engagement in de-escalation efforts and acknowledged Moscow’s diplomatic initiatives. The two nations have maintained strong trade and military cooperation since the start of the Ukraine conflict, though Beijing continues to position itself as a neutral actor in the ongoing crisis.

China’s Position on the Ukraine Conflict
Despite never publicly condemning Russia’s actions, China has faced criticism from NATO members, who claim Beijing is indirectly supporting Moscow. However, during the call, Xi emphasised that China is open to assisting diplomatic negotiations, particularly following last week’s talks between Russian and US officials in Saudi Arabia.

The Kremlin later confirmed that Putin had provided Xi with an update on these discussions, marking the first direct engagement between Moscow and Washington at a high level since the conflict began three years ago.

A Long-Standing Alliance
Xi described the China-Russia relationship as one between “true friends” and “good neighbours”, highlighting historical ties and mutual support. Over the years, both leaders have publicly spoken about their personal rapport, with Xi previously calling Putin his “best friend” and Putin reciprocating with similar remarks.

The call coincided with the three-year anniversary of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine, which sparked the most significant conflict in Europe since World War II.
